Vera C. Rubin Observatory at Dorrance DOME

Mirage3D has created a new library asset for Digistar: the Vera C. Rubin Observatory! This detailed 3D asset includes the building, the telescope, the camera, and the surrounding terrain.

The 3D model was used in A Night of Cosmic Discovery, as part of the 247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), hosted at the Arizona Science Center’s Dorrance DOME. During the event, the first images from the Rubin Observatory were showcased on the LED dome in stunning 8K resolution.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is located on the El Peñón peak in Chile, at an altitude of 2,682 meters. It houses the Simonyi Survey Telescope, featuring an 8.4-meter primary mirror. With at it’s heart is the world’s largest 3.2-gigapixel digital camera, allowing the facility to capture and document the sky with unprecedented detail.

This model was created for real-time visualization and immersive storytelling, helping to connect astronomers, educators, and the public to inspire the next generation of explorers.
